Outdoor time

My man and my boy made me a garden this weekend.
I've wanted one of these for years. But since we live on a bed of CLAY AND ROCK, it never happened.
That is until........... our generous neighbor gave us three whopping loads of manure and three loads of black dirt. FREE!!!!!
I am officially a farm girl now.

And besides that...........

Rick finally trusted me to drive his "new baby".
I must be strange because I sorta enjoy mowing.

1. It's mindless!!!

2. I can sing really loud and no one has to hear.

3. Plus the neat freak in me likes the look of all the lines. Back and forth. Back and forth. Back and forth. (Gracie calls this a pattern, I call it back and forth! hehe)

It took me a bit to catch on (nearly all day).

Let me just say........ donuts are fun for teenage boys, not so fun for 34 year old moms. I'm debating whether I gave myself a small case of whiplash the first round or two.

It also goes much faster than our tractor mower. This baby has some horsies in the engine.

I actually had my camera in my lap the entire time I mowed.

1. I'm weird.

2. I wanted to take a picture of a snake.

(note: It is impossible to take photos while driving this machine. You definately need both arms to drive!!! That is unless you don't mind if your back and forth lines are a little wavy?)
So, I'm mowing our four wheeler path and I see a snake. A big, long black snake. They are mostly harmless but I still want it DEAD!!!!!! DEAD, DEAD, DEAD AS A DOORNAIL!!!! He takes off through the high weeds.

He's not getting away that easy (remember this machine is FAST!). So, my inablility to drive has gone out the window. I am now "a mowing master". I take out after him.

He make's a right. I follow.
He zig-zags through the pasture. So do I.
I follow this vile beast for what felt like 10 minutes. (probably 10 seconds)
I increase my speed, so does he.
He outsmarted me.
He got away.
But that's OK because except for the debree in my ear and my nose after mowing, I must say.... I had fun!

I planted five more rose bushes this week and cannot wait until they begin to bloom. My favorite shades of pink and cream came via, Jackson and Perkins. I've always had the best luck with this company. I have high expectations for these babies. Until they begin to bloom, you will have to look at photos of the only rose bush blooming. This yellow gem.

While I was cleaning out the rose gardens I found a nest of bunnies. Gracie was asking to keep them before she even saw them. Of course, my answer was no. I explained that these bunnies had a mommy. She would be so sad if her babies were gone.

We settled with holding them and that seemed like a good compromise. I had her put on gloves so the mommy wouldn't detect human scent. Hopefully they will be OK. T-bone picked up on their squeals and his ears perked up. We had to lock him up until we had them all safely covered back in their soft nest. Gus was tied up (and not happy about it, might I add).

All was well until 2:30 in the morning. Rick and I were sound asleep in bed. We both sat up in bed when we heard a squeal, squeal, squeal!!!!! I was the first to speak. "What was that". Rick was in zombie-land and didn't respond. So I lugged my hiney out of bed to find the critter. I knew that it was IN THE HOUSE. I knew that it was probably small and rodent-like. I was praying that it wasn't larger than a raccoon. But in the back of my mind, I was praying it wasn't a mouse. I really do NOT LIKE MICE!!!!

I was pleasantly surprised to find it was one of those cute little bunnies.

I carefully took him outside to his nest. I was in my under-roos so I didn't stick around to see if he was comfy or not. I did check on them this morning and all is well.

THE TAME BUNNY UPDATE:
"The long ears" are doing quite well and adjusting nicely to their new home. Besides one eensy weensy episode, things have gone very smoothly. (Gracie was a little eager with the lettuce. Let's just say that Cookie had a tummy ache. We took him to the vet and now all is well on the ranch. There was a small side effect to the little fur ball that required ointment for a week. Trust me, ahem........... it's probably best left unsaid.)

We placed the bunnies in the largest Longaberger basket I own. (Because a laundry basket isn't good enough for a Easter bunny gift. No worries, I won't be bringing you supper from this basket.) We carefully explained Cookie's dilemma to the vet and Gracie trotted back to the exam room to get "it" all fixed up. I say "it" because we aren't quite sure whether Cookie is a boy or a girl. Gracie is praying that it's a girl. I'm praying that "it's" a boy (Nibbles is a boy............. doesn't take a rocket scientist). If Cookie is a girl, then a minor surgery may be in her future. If it's a boy, then we might tell a little white lie to Gracie and say he's a girl. Anyway, we aren't going to know for sure until Cookie's bottom gets better. So, another$20.00 vet bill is in my very near future.

Sorry if this post seems a little jumbled. I have started and stopped it for five days straight.
I'll try to do better about blogging this week. :)

Spring is springing

Just when I think I should pack my bags and move to a warmer state, Missouri throws me gorgeous weather.
I thought it would be interesting to show what is blooming in our yard this week.
This is our gorgeous Bradford Pear. We have two in the front yard. Although they were planted at the same time, one is far prettier and fuller than the other.
This is a Redbud that I planted last Spring. Redbuds aren't my favorite tree. I love them while they are blooming but after that they seem ugly to me. I wish that they would stay purple all summer.
I have planted four new flowering trees this Spring. This is one of them. It's a flowering Crabapple. They are highly scented. I cannot wait until this beauty matures. I know that I will look forward to it every Spring.

I've planted 8 rose bushes. Two of them are already blooming. I love the bright yellow. I cannot wait to fill my vases this summer with these gems.
I paused a minute to capture a sillouette photo of Ian. Our boys spend hours upon hours shooting hoops in the summer. I love this picture!!!
Here are some tulips that I planted last Fall. I have lived in this house for 5 1/2 years and never planted a bulb. I'm so glad that I finally took the time to do it. I'm really enjoying my Spring bouquets.
The last flower photo for today. Isn't she divine?
Gracie and Ian were riding bikes before sunset. I thought it was funny that Gracie was in her pajamas with no shoes.
Then she got chilly, so she went inside to put pajama bottoms on and her cowgirl hat. I love the knotted detail in the front on her gown. So chic!

The sun went down and we all went inside.
I look forward to the kids being out of school. No schedules, no bedtimes, and long days.
Doesn't it make you crave a glass of lemonade and a ripe garden tomato. Yummy!

Our Cowgirl

Gracie went to a friend's house last weekend and rode this four-legged creature..........
I was a little worried that it would re-ignite her intense desire for a horse.
She hasn't whinnied more than she normally does.
Or wore her cowgirl hat more than three times since she got back.
She hasn't begged us to bring one home.

Or tried to feed us oats.

I have however, found this beside her bed...............

Cartoons are not reality!!!

I've recently had a incident with a skillet, an air-soft gun, and a screaming child that I thought you might chuckle at......................... (or you may call the humane society)

Remember a few months back when our big ole' female dog had a run-in with our lil' ole' fat dog? Well round two began a few days back. Friends it was ugly with a capital U!!!!

Rick assigned Ian the chore of feeding and watering Jesse Jane. I'm not sure how Ian became so lucky, but nonetheless, it was his job.

So after a typical evening of run, run, and more running, he trucked out to her cage to do his duty. I came into the house and decided to let Gus Bus out to potty. (the poor tyke had held it in for a good six hours) Little did I know that Jesse had squeezed herself out of the kennel while Ian was TRYING to feed her.

She noticed Gus........ then it was on like Donkey Kong.

I was in the kitchen preparing taco meat (that will be important soon) when Ian came barreling in the front door yelling. I FINALLY figured out the problem then ran outside to break it up. However, in the back of my mind, I was having flashbacks. Mandy, remember the stitches, the needles, the blood, the PAIN!!!!!!

I don't know what a normal person would have done? But my first thought was AIR-SOFT gun. So000000, I ran in the house, screaming for Ryan. Since daddy was gone, he was man of the house. I told him to get the gun and come outside. He didn't hesitate. Ryan + Guns = I'M IN!!!!!

Ryan begins shooting the dog while I am trying digest the whole situation. Gracie is screaming bloody murder. Ian is trying to get in the middle of the dogs. Ryan is shooting Jesse over and over and over again. This isn't working.

So, I had a light bulb moment!!!!

The taco meat!!!!!! I ran in the house. Grabbed the skillet full of piping hot meat and grease and ran outside. I carefully placed it in front of her face. (in my warped mind I thought she would prefer fully cooked meat rather than raw Gus) She didn't take the bait.

Next idea.....................
Heave the meat out of the skillet and start beating the tar out of her with it.
Yes my friends, this was a cartoon moment.

Gracie at this point is rolling around in the grass, covering her eyes, SCREAMING!
Ian is pulling Gus' back legs.
Ryan is STILL shooting Jesse!
And I am beating her with the skillet!!!

I was having slow motion visions while this was all happening.
"I hope no one is watching this" was the main thought. Followed closely by "I wonder why this skillet isn't knocking her out, it always does on T.V.". Then lastly, "Where is Jack Bauer when you need him?"

This was a genuine Smith "White Trash Moment".

Long story short...... Gus survived with only minor cuts and a bruised ego (from getting whooped by a girl) and Jesse has found a new home.

Easter photos

I wanted to finish posting the Easter photos from last weekend. It seems that I've been in a huge hurry all week. Blogging has slipped in the priority list. Run, run, run. You all know how it is!!!!! $%(#@! Yikes, did I say that?
CANDY...... CANDY..... CANDY!!! (That's all I'm going to say about that. arggg)
The bunnies arrived and Gracie was one super happy camper!
She named the darker of the two Cookies and Cream (we will call him Cookie), the other is Nibbles.
Rick and I nieces, Courtney and Allie.
Rick and his Momma
Rick's cousins, Bode and his momma, Brenda and Crystal.
Gracie hates her new haircut but I LOOOOVVVVEEE it.
Rick's family hanging out on the front porch. It was the prettiest Easter I can remember in ages.
Rick and Ian having a dual. Pretty sure that Ian won.

Ian now hides from the camera. He covers his face, turns his back to me, and runs away. I have my ways though. I'm super sneaky with the photographs!!!
Crystal and Bode
Rick's mom and dad wanted a photo of all the grandkids. They are all at this "I'm way too cool for pictures" age. It was pure torture for them. This is outtake #1

#6
You get the idea.

It's Easter Eve

I have survived three days of non-stop Easter festivities!

I am tired and maybe a little grumpy. Yet I'm thankful. Easter is rich with hope and grace, I cannot help but smile.

I will post all of the gazillion pictures that I took. But I'm going to do it over a week's time. (because as I mentioned above, I am tired and a little grumpy).
Here are the two dozen eggs that I hard boiled for the monkeys to dye. Something about the "neat freak" in me fears the words dye & children. They should never be combined. However I am a gluten for punishment and I need a few more messes to clean.
Gracie and Ian both colored their eggs with a white crayon before dyeing. Ian wrote "The Government Can". I'm imagining the puzzled looks on your faces. It didn't make sense to me either. That is, until I asked. Let's put it this way, he learns more than math and science at school. It's a silly song that they listen to..... over....... and over....... and over again. It's called, "The Government Can". I am posting the link at the bottom of this page. If you want to chuckle, you're welcome to read. If you're feeling patriotic, you might skip it.

Ian had a friend spend the night. His name is Brett but we have called him Brutus for years. The name makes me laugh because he is older than Ian, yet, at least two feet shorter than him.
I don't know why his nickname is Brutus?

Notice that Ryan is eating in this picture. He is a bottomless pit. Our grocery bills are proof of that. He ingests gallons of food each day. It's enough to make a grown man cringe.

I think they all did a wonderful job. Don't you?

I hope that your Easter was blessed. Tomorrow I hope to post pictures of all the loot the Easter Bunny left. He was WAY TOO GENEROUS this year!!!! (wink..... wink)

Gracie's Spring Poem

Yesterday Gracie had a classroom play. I filmed most of it. At the bottom of this post is Gracie's part. She did a wonderful job, I thought. She spoke very clearly and at the perfect volume. Click on the arrow in the center of the box for it to play.

I had a mini photo session with the bunnies. This is Gracie's Easter basket. Aren't they precious?
And they LOVE romaine lettuce!!!!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it.

I can't wait to hear what she names them. Since they will be hers and her responsibility, their names will be completely up to her.

I am really hoping this works. I've never uploaded a video to blogger from my computer.
This is Gracie's classroom play.
DISCLOSURE:
I am NOT a professional!!!! I had a small window of visibility. It made for one rough and shaky video. So, I apologize in advance.
Also, there is a moment in the beginning where you will be looking at NOTHING. I was waiting for Gracie to get into position. Keep watching. She will eventually make a grand entrance.
